JVC GZ-HM400 launched in Japan

JVC revealed a new top-of-the-line camcorder in Japan, the GZ-HM400. The camcorder, which captures Full 1920 x 1080 HD video and contains 32GB of built-in memory, appears to contain the same 1/2.33-inch CMOS sensor as JVC's previous top-line camcorder, the GZ-X900. The GZ-HM400, however, has a much larger body design and offers a variety of handling features—including a manual control dial—that are absent on the GZ-X900.
Additional new features on the GZ-HM400 include a revamped zoom rocker that looks like it was lifted straight from JVC's prosumer line, a 10x optical zoom with the Konica Minolta HD lens, and a new K2 technology that JVC claims will produce more faithful, higher-fidelity audio.
Like the GZ-X900, the GZ-HM400 can capture native 9-megapixel still images with a 3456 x 2592 image resolution. The camcorder also includes the same high speed shooting modes featured on the GZ-X900 (600fps, 300fps, and 120fps), as well as multiple continuous shooting modes for still images. The GZ-HM400 will be one of the largest and heaviest members of JVC's Everio HD lineup. According to JVC, the camcorder weighs 485g (including the supplied battery pack), which is roughly 200g more than the JVC GZ-X900 and the GZ-HM200.
Akihabara news has reported the GZ-HM400 will be available in Japan soon (likely the beginning of August) for 110,000 Yen (approx. $1,154 US dollars). The camcorder will be available in black or silver models. No news on a US release date has been verified.

JVC Everio HD40/HD30 dual HDD and MicroSDHC 1080p camcorders

Jun 16th 2008 via SlashGear :)

JVC has announced two new HDD-based high-definition camcorders, both capable of capturing full 1920 x 1080 footage. The GZ-HD40 has a 120GB drive, while the GZ-HD30 has 80GB; each also features a MicroSDHC card slot. As of June 2008, the HD30 is the world’s smallest Full HD camcorder with a 1.8-inch HDD.

The pair are the first offered that can capture in both AVCHD and MPEG-2 formats. At their highest quality setting, the HD40 can capture up to 15hrs in AVCHD or 10hrs in MPEG-2, and the HD30 10hrs in AVCHD or 6hrs in MPEG-2. Both use JVC’s HD Gigabrid video engine, have Auto Light, Focus Assist and Manual settings, and can capture still images while simultaneously recording video (using a 2.68-megapixel sensor).

JVC GY-HM100 Camcorder Reviewed

Jeremy Stamas at camcorderinfo.com has a review of the JVC GY-HM100 Pro camcorder. See for yourself here.
Along with the newly released Panasonic AG-HMC40, the JVC GY-HM100 is one of the smallest pro camcorders on the market. Weighing only 3.1 pounds, the camcorder is an ideal unit for a videographer who desperately needs to save some space. Recording natively progressive video to regular SDHC memory cards using the MPEG-2 codec, the camcorder is nearly as simple and easy to use as many consumer models. The GY-HM100 comes with a 10x optical zoom lens, a detacheable shotgun microphone, and a decent amount of manual controls. The camcorder also offers a seamless workflow with Final Cut Pro, as it can record video using Apple's MOV file format.

JVC GY-HM700 ProHD Camcorder unveiled

The highlight of JVC’s presence at NAB 2009 is its latest Compact Shoulder professional camcorder developed for mainstream production, electronic newsgathering and cinematography, the GY-HM700. The new camera uniquely records directly to inexpensive SDHC memory cards in the QuickTime (.MOV) format for Final Cut Pro™, and optionally to SxS media compatible with Sony's XDCAM EX™ format. Recording in the editing system's native format eliminates the time consuming transfer step and dramatically speeds up the post-production workflow, a major breakthrough for JVC and the industry. Additionally, the GY-HM700 includes a number of key technology innovations that result in significantly improved resolution in the camera's core components: CCD/optical block, lens, and viewfinder.

"Our new generation of ProHD products brings together the most highly regarded and proven technologies in the industry, and the GY-HM700 will have broad appeal,” says Craig Yanagi, Manager, Marketing and Brand Strategy at JVC. “It's an ideal camera for electronic news gathering, documentary production, or mainstream television production. Because of its extremely low media cost, it will have special appeal on projects with high shooting ratios. A documentary producer will now be able to shoot hundreds of hours of footage on a single project without off-loading the material to a hard disk or other storage medium."

Buy a JVC DR-HD100GB100 HD 100GB Portable DTE Recorder for ProHD Camcorders

Industry’s first native support format for Apple’s Final Cut ProThe GY-HM700 natively records the QuickTime file format used by Apple for Final Cut Pro. There is no need to convert or rewrap files prior to editing. Post-production can begin immediately after shooting. It is even possible to edit directly from the memory card. Since no transfer or re-encoding takes place, first generation quality is always maintained.

Additionally, the GY-HM700 is the industry's first shoulder supported ENG camcorder to store files on inexpensive SDHC memory cards. The camera provides 2 memory card slots, for a total of up to 64GB of on-board storage—enough for more than 6 hours* of continuous HD recording. The camera automatically begins recording on the second card when the first card fills up. When the second card fills up, the camera reverts to recording to the first card slot, allowing for virtually unlimited recording time.

SDHC cards are economical, highly reliable, and make possible a recording system that consumes up to 20% less power than tape or HDD based systems. The per-minute cost of SDHC memory is comparable to video tape. Moreover, SDHC media is the first practical solid state solution to physical archive.

JVC is offering the GY-HM700 in two basic configurations, the GY-HM700U which records only on SDHC cards, and the GY-HM700UXT, which records to both SxS memory and SDHC cards simultaneously. The base model can be upgraded by adding the SxS adapter later. With the SxS adapter installed, the camera can record in the XDCAM EX .MP4 format onto either or both SxS memory and SDHC memory. It is also possible to split formats and record .MP4 to the SxS card while recording .MOV to the SDHC memory card. Having two copies instantaneously available provides more versatility in the field with the assurance of always having a back-up.

High Resolution Progressive Imaging

JVC Everio GZ-HD6 3CCD 120GB Hard Disk Drive High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

The GY-HM700 utilizes three precisely aligned 1/3-inch progressive scan CCDs. JVC engineers developed a unique 1/3-inch optical block with H & V Offset and a patented exclusive Adaptive Pixel Correlation Technique that produces resolution significantly higher than previous JVC models and comparable to cameras with larger image sensors.

The higher resolution imaging is complemented with a new standard detachable HD lens by Canon, the KT14x4.4KRSJ. Its superior MTF provides higher resolution than typical low cost lenses and is ideal for full 1920 x 1080 imaging. The GY-HM700's standard bayonet mount accepts a wide range of optional lenses available from JVC. Cinematographers will also appreciate JVC's optional prime lens adapter. The GY-HM700 can flip the image commonly inverted when prime lenses are used.

JVC’s proprietary MPEG2 encoder provides highly efficient compression at bit rates up to 35Mbps. The GY-HM700 supports all major HD signal formats including 1920 x 1080, 1440 x 1080 and 1280 x 720.

New high resolution LCOS viewfinderOne of the big improvements featured with the GY-HM700 is the new LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) viewfinder. With 1.22 megapixels, it offers the highest resolution JVC has ever provided in a viewfinder. This new all-digital viewfinder displays images with more than 5 times the resolution of typical color viewfinders. Its sturdy reinforced die-cast aluminum chassis and LED light source ensure years of trouble-free operation.

Buy a JVC GY-HD200UB High Definition 3-CCD MiniDV Professional Camcorder with 16x ProHD Fujinon Lens

JVC has also increased the size of the flip-out LCD monitor to 4.3 inches. This jumbo size monitor functions for recording, playback, clip management, and menu operation. Menu operation is intuitive with a single disk, outlined by an LED lamp.

Weighing about 8 lbs. including lens, viewfinder, microphone and battery, the GY-HM700 rests comfortably on the right shoulder to provide stable, steady shots, without causing the fatigue associated with bulkier cameras.

The GY-HM700 records two channels of uncompressed LPCM 16 bit audio at 48Khz. Levels can be controlled manually, or automatically using AGC, and an audio meter is provided in the LCD and viewfinder displays for easy adjustment. Balanced XLR inputs with phantom power are provided on the camera for an external microphone and/or wireless receiver, and a shotgun microphone is provided.

Built-in clip view and management functions, a spot exposure meter, and JVC’s patented Focus Assist round out the GY-HM700’s many on-board features. The camera provides HD/SD SDI, Component, Composite and simultaneous DV/HDV IEEE-1394 outputs. Optional JVC remote control units can be connected to the GY-HM700’s 6-pin remote connector.

The GY-HM700 base model is immediately available with a Fujinon 17:1 lens and will be available with the Canon 14:1 in June 2009 at a manufacturer’s suggested price of $7,995. The GY-HM700UXT, which includes the KA-MR100G SxS Media Recorder will is available at a manufacturer’s suggested price of $8,995.

JVC Everio X, the 500fps HD camcorder for those ultra-slo-mo shots

JVC launches Everio X camcorder

Small but powerful...

Although we’re naturally suspicious of anything that needs an “X” in its name to sound exciting, JVC’s new flagship, the Everio X Hybrid looks like a promising prospect for amateur film-makers.

Weighing in at just under 300g, this will be one of the lighter HD camcorders on the market. To cut weight, and minimize size JVC has done away with an internal memory and relied on SDHC memory cards, bringing the size of the camcorder down to that of a “chunky smart phone.”

The small camcorder will pack a 1920 x 1080 full-HD and capture 9.0-megapixel images. It will also offer up to 500fps recording – perfect for capturing your kids crossing the finishing line at sports day or recreating the Billion Dollar Man in your Y-fronts.

JVC also says that it will come bundled with software to make it easy to export your movies to iTunes or YouTube.

All this will come at a rather high price though - one JVC rep said that the camcorder will cost around £800 when it’s released in June.

Boston Globe Discusses HD Camcorders

In a 2-page article titled "Capture memories without hassle", The Boston Globe correspondent John Dyer discusses a few aspects of affordable and small HD camcorders available on the market. While not deeply technical, the article also compares the pros and cons of four camcorders available from Best Buy: Pure Digital's Flip Video MinoHD, for $229.99; JVC's Everio G, for $479.99; Samsung's High-Definition Digital Camcorder, for $722.49; and Sony's Handycam, at $809.99.
"In the 1970s, people gathered in their living rooms to watch grainy home movies filmed on Super 8 cameras. In the 1980s, they carried clunky video cameras on their shoulders and popped cassettes into VCR machines. In the 1990s, they burned DVDs with rudimentary digital recorders.

Today, they're using HD, or high-definition, camcorders to upload videos to YouTube."

PCWorld reviews JVC Everio GZ-HD40

A compact model with a beefy 120GB hard drive, the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 records to two formats: the compact and increasingly common AVCHD, and the higher-quality MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS). Although it has decent automatic and manual image control, the JVC Everio GZ-HD40 is like a bilingual exchange student lacking perfect mastery of either his native or secondary tongue. It's a good HD camcorder, but better values abound.

The JVC Everio GZ-HD40 captures 1080i high-definition video onto its 120GB hard drive (or a user-supplied microSDHC card) with a 1/3-inch CMOS sensor. This JVC Everio GZ-HD40 camcorder is compact, but not cheap. And its image quality isn't the greatest.

JVC 2009 Everio Series with GZ-HD300, GZ-HD320

Buy a JVC Everio GZ-HD300 60GB High-Def Camcorder (Black)

The JVC HD Everio line all record 1920 x 1080 full HD video. The GZ-HD300, with 60GB hard drive, the GZ-HD320, (with 120GB hard drive), offer HDD storage for extra-long recording times, and the GZ-HM200 offers dual SD card recording, with continuous recording from one card to the next. The HD Everio is one of the smallest and lightest full HD camcorder models available.

The 2009 JVC Everio line make it easy to watch videos on an iPod or iPhone® by exporting videos to the user’s iTunes library with the new One Touch Export function provided by bundled software for Windows.

This joins the One Touch Upload function for uploading to YouTube. This line is still packed with a One Touch DVD Creation function for easy archiving and sharing by disc, a long-time Everio feature.

Another new feature found on the 2009 JVC Everio line is the Digest Playback, which offers an easy and entertaining way to check the of the Everio’s HDD or SD/SDHC card. The function automatically highlight scenes from among the recorded content using JVC’s proprietary algorithm and plays back what looks like a "coming attractions" trailer for a movie. Sixty minutes of footage is condensed into five minutes of highlight scenes.

Closing the LCD also closes the lens cover and shuts down the power. Recording can start in about one second after the LCD is re-opened.

JVC Everio GZ-X900 Camcorder Reviewed

Camcorderinfo has this to say about the JVC Everio X900:

Announcing the X900 at PMA seems like a clear signal that JVC is positioning the camcorder as a true video/still hybrid—camcorders traditionally take the back seat to still cameras at PMA. With 9-megapixel stills, fifteen scene modes reserved exclusively for still photography, and a number of manual adjustments available, the X900 is shaping up to be just that. We had a chance to spend a few hours with the new camcorder in hand and our interest is definitely piqued. A lot of JVC design elements are carried over to the X900, including the Laser Touch controls, but there are a lot of new things to see as well: a juicy mode dial, some unique LCD cavity buttons, and conspicuously absent hand strap.

The X900, in fact, seems like it will be in direct competition with the new Samsung HMX-R10 announced just a month and a half ago at CES. Until we get the final models in our labs, we're not sure which one will take the cake.

JVC Everio GZ-HD300 HD Camcorder review

TrustedReviews (in UK) has a fresh entry on theJVC Everio GZ-HD300, check it out.

JVC's Everio GZ-MG330 was one of the camcorder successes of 2008. Combining real camcorder abilities with hard disk recording for under £300 proved to be a market-winning formula. But as 2009 draws on, and even pocket Internet camcorders go HD, there is clearly room for a similarly potent but pocket-friendly model in high definition. So now we have the GZ-HD300. It's only 10g heavier than the MG330, a mere millimetre wider, and also comes in a choice of colours, in this case red, black or blue (denoted by the last three letters after the 300).

JVC Unveils New GZ-X900 Everio HD

The SD-card based Everio X will be the company’s first to incorporate a 10-megapixel CMOS sensor, capable of capturing 9-megapixel stills and recording AVCHD format HD video at 1920 by 1080 at 24MBps. The unit is also capable of recording slow motion video at 300fps, 300fps and 120fps.

While shooting video, the unit can capture 5-megapixel still photos at a 60fps burst mode for a total of 11 frames. In standard still photo mode, it can burst at 15fps for up to 15 9-megapixel stills.

JVC launches GY-HM700 ProHD and GY-HM100 ProHD, both capable of recording for Final Cut Pro

JVC has launched two relatively inexpensive camcorders, the GY-HM700 ProHD camcorder and the GY-HM100 ProHD that offers users low prices and some technological firsts, according to Craig Yanagi, JVC's national marketing manager for creation products.

Both cameras "were designed and developed with native Final Cut pro recording capability," Yanagi said. "This is the first time that a professional camera manufacturer has been licensed by Apple to use this technology."

Apple's Final Cut Pro has become increasingly popular in the production community. Designing the cameras to record in the .mov file format means that post production can begin immediately after shooting. "There is no ingest necessary so there is zero downtime," he said.

The GY-HM700 is also the industry's first shoulder mounted camcorder to store files on inexpensive SDHC memory cards. "It allows you to record high bandwidth video at about a buck a minute, which is on par with Betacam SP but light years ahead in efficiency and operation," Yanagi said.

Yanagi also said JVC's alliance with Sony means it is possible for the GY-HM700 to record in Sony ZDCAM EX compatible files. "The professional market has been looking for some uniformity as regards to platforms," he said. "Our announcement with Sony last year at IBC was the first time that two professional camera manufacturers were converging and aligning on a single recording platform."
The GY-HM700 is priced at $7,995 and includes a new chip that JVC is calling a "dynamic digital signal processor" to improve imaging. The higher resolution imaging is complemented by a new Cannon KT14x4.4KRSI lens, which will be available in June. The camera supports all major HD formats and has a new LCOS viewfinder that can display images at over five times the resolution of typical color viewfinders, Yanagi said.

The GY-HM100 was previewed at the Final Cut Pro User Group SuperMeet at Macworld in January but was not formally announced until mid-February. This lighter, hand-held camcorder weights about 3.1 pounds and has a list price of $3,995.

GY-HM100 / GY-HM700 Common Features

Industry’s first native support QuickTime file format for Apple’s Final Cut Pro
Both camcorders natively record the file format used by Apple QuickTime for Final Cut Pro. Video clips are dragged directly from the storage media onto the non-linear editor's timeline, eliminating the need for transcoding that can consume excessive time and disk space while maintaining original first generation image quality.

Enhanced MPEG2 Long GOP Encoder
Drawing from its experience in developing encoders currently used in broadcast applications, JVC developed a proprietary codec capable of providing highly efficient compression up to 35 megabits per second, a bit rate supporting full 1920 x 1080 encoding in the HQ mode. This results in recorded images of extremely high quality. MPEG2 long GOP encoding is the most widely implemented broadcast standard compression and is currently supported by all popular editing systems and broadcast servers. Additionally, both cameras can record 720p (19/35Mbps) and 1080i (25Mbps) in SP mode, assuring compatibility with today’s most popular professional NLE systems.

SDHC Media Card
Both units record on widely available SDHC memory cards, presently available in capacities up to 32GB. The cameras provide 2 memory card slots, for a total of up to 64GB of on board storage—enough for up to 6 hours of continuous HD recording. The cameras automatically begin recording on the second card when the first card is full. Also, unlike other professional solid state media, the per-minute cost of SDHC memory is comparable to professional video tape. Moreover, SDHC media becomes the first practical solid state solution for physical archiving.

GY-HM100 Features

Ultra-Compact 3.0 lb. Handheld Form Factor

The GY-HM100 is the smallest professional format 3-CCD camcorder available at about the size of a lens for a 2/3-inch imager camera. This makes it ideal for applications where a full size camera would be impractical, such as tight quarters and operating in potentially unsafe situations. For a smaller footprint and less conspicuous shooting, the handle can be easily removed and the audio can be recorded via the built-in 2-channel microphone.
Additional GY-HM100 Features

* Newly designed JVC’s original Optical Image Stabilization
* JVC patented Focus Assist
* Color viewfinder and LCD display
* 2-Channel balanced audio inputs, mic/line switchable with built-in phantom power supply
* HDMI output
* USB 2.0 interface
* The GY-HM100 is scheduled for delivery in April 2009, with a list price under $4,000.

Preliminary GY-HM700 Features

1. Compact shoulder form factor of less than 4 kg (8.9 lbs.) in operation
2. High quality 1/3” progressive 3CCD with unique JVC’s H/V spatial offset
3. Newly developed 14x high-quality interchangeable lens by Canon
4. Newly developed high-quality LCOS viewfinder
5. Newly developed large LCD display
6. Double-memory hybrid recording system using optional KA-MR100G SxS memory card recorder

JVC GY-HM700 Pro HD Camcorder

JVC announces its latest Compact Shoulder professional camcorder developed for mainstream production, electronic newsgathering and cinematography, the JVC GY-HM700. The new JVC HD camcorder uniquely records directly to inexpensive SDHC memory cards in the QuickTime format for Final Cut Pro, and optionally to SxS media compatible with Sony's XDCAM EX format. Recording in the editing system's native format eliminates the time consuming transfer step and dramatically speeds up the post-production workflow, a major advancement for JVC and the industry. The JVC camcorder includes technology innovations that result in significantly improved resolution in the camera's core components: CCD, lens, and viewfinder.

The JVC HD camcorder is the industry's first shoulder supported camcorder to store files on inexpensive SDHC memory cards. The camera provides 2 memory card slots, for a total of up to 64GB of on-board storage - enough for more than 6 hours of continuous HD recording. The camera automatically begins recording on the second card when the first card fills up. When the second card fills up, the camera reverts to recording to the first card slot, allowing for virtually unlimited recording lengths. SDHC memory cards are economical, highly reliable, and make possible a recording system that consumes up to 20% less power than tape or HDD based systems. The per-minute cost of SDHC memory is comparable to video tape. Moreover, SDHC media is the first practical solid state solution to physical archive.
