Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG100

Capable of 1080p video recording and 14 megapixel still photography, while Sanyo's latest pistol grip HD camcorder falls a little short in a few key areas, it does enough right to make it worth a look.

It may share a similar look and spec sheet, but it's a noticeable improvement over its predecessor the VPC-CG10, squeezing in a CMOS sensor, 5x optical zoom, and SDXC card support among other features.

While 1080p recording still isn't as crisp as some of the rivals, suffering from the odd bit of artefacting and not quite pin-sharp visuals, the VPC-CG100's main video capturing faults lie with the accuracy of its colour reproduction.

Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG10 Review

CamcorderInfo.com has reviewed the Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG10.
Though it may be in the same price category as the Flip UltraHD and its clones, there are plenty of things that set the CG10 apart, for good and for bad. While the sometimes mystifying interface isn't nearly as simple to use as the Flip cams, the Xacti offers a wealth of manual controls, digital image stabilization, and 5x optical zoom. It also has superior bright light video performance and impressive still photos that far outstrip the competition. If you want the easiest video recording possible, the Flip series may be a better choice. But our experience both inside and outside the lab proved that you get a lot more camcorder for your money with the VPC-CG10.

Sanyo VPC-WH1 waterproof HD camcorder reviewed

Geek.com and PCPro have reviews of the Sanyo VPC-WH1, let's see what they say.

Geek.com: First off, this VPC-WH1 shoots 1280×720 HD video at 30fps. That means all your underwater video is going to look very good (compared to what’s out there at this level) on both Vimeo and YouTube–providing you have great lighting to accompany you. The VPC-WH1 does not have a video light of any sort, so that means that some of your images may turn out a bit noisy. In this case, Sanyo’s 3D DNR image noise reduction technology won’t be able to help you because the image becomes softer: meaning that whatever you shoot underwater in theory will look even softer than it already might. Additionally, the 2.5-inch LCD (not very high resolution) might not be able to help you out very well. Once again though, we haven’t tried it yet, but I’d recommend finding good lighting.

PCPro: Sanyo's VPC-WH1 isn't your average camcorder, however. It's completely sealed against the elements, and not just showerproof, but completely waterproof to a depth of 10m. So the next time you go swimming with dolphins, paddling in the sea at Scarborough or windsurfing in Waikiki you can commit the whole thing to video without having to worry about your technology giving up the ghost.

It's no empty claim either. The WH1 is officially rated to IPX8, which means it can be completely immersed "beyond 1m" and we proved this by dunking it in a sink and a pond while filming with no ill effect. Naturally, all the ports and flaps are sealed with rubber gaskets and lock tightly closed, while the lens is covered.

Sanyo's 1080P Camcorders: VPC-FH1, VPC-HD2000

The VPC-FH1 and the VPC-HD2000, the first consumer camcorders to record natively in 1080P (1920 x 1080 at 60 progressive frames/sec). Nearly identical camcorders in two different body shapes, they bring a number of new features to the Sanyo line, including high-speed recording, face detection, and HDMI output.

The VPC-HD2000 is an upright, "pistol-grip" design, replacing the VPC-HD1010. By contrast, the VPC-FH1 has a traditional, horizontal design. In interview, Sanyo stated that this was an attempt to increase its popularity in the U.S, where upright camcorders have had a hard time finding acceptance in the higher-end range.

Both camcorders feature an 8-megapixel CMOS sensor, recording 1080P/60fps, 1080i/60fps, and 1080P/30fps. Still photos can be recorded in native 8-megapixel or interpolated 12-megapixel.

Sanyo Introduces Two Waterproof HD Camcorders: The VPC-WH1 and VPC-CA9

Sanyo expanded its line of high definition waterproof camcorders today with two new models. The VPC-CA9 will replace last year's VPC-CA8 as the new upright, "pistol-grip" model, submersible to 1.5 meters. The VPC-WH1 is a new model in a horizontal form factor, and can go down to 3 meters. Both record in 1280 x 720P are available in a variety of colors.

The VPC-WH1 offers a 30x optical zoom, 2-megapixel still photo capture, and Sanyo's new noise reduction technology. Video can be exported through an HDMI connection, also a first for Sanyo, as is the new long battery life, with an expected 180 minutes of record time. The WH1 also has a 2.5-inch LCD and Face Detection for up to 12 faces.

The VPC-CA9 may not be able to play in the same depths as the WH1, but the video quality may be more enticing. The camcorder features a 9-megapixel CMOS sensor, allowing for native still photos of the same size, or 12-megapixel interpolated images. The LCD and Face Detection features are the same as the WH1, but the CA9 has a no HDMI or extended life battery.

Sanyo Xacti HD800 - Let's shoot more movies

The Sanyo Xacti HD800 is aimed at consumers who want HD videos, up to 8Megapixel stills, video blogging and video sharing and easy connection in one device. The Xacti DMX-HD800 camcorder is available in gold, pink and black, trying to focus on female users. Once again, I miss a "Hello Kitty" version.

The Xacti HD800 uses MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video-recording format, which records video and audio data into the same file. Files in this format are highly compressed, which means you can record for longer while maintaining image quality. As both video and audio information are contained in the same files, they are easier to upload to the web. Despite its small, pocket- or purse-fitting body, the HD800 can take high-definition videos and 8.0-megapixel still images. You can even record videos and stills simultaneously, without the hassle of having to switch modes.

The Xacti HD800 has a face chaser function capable of capturing up to 12 persons in both video- and still-shooting modes. Partial faces are more accurately detected as well, thanks to a new control system. Now you can capture your target more easily, whether you’re shooting a video or a still image. This function also rapidly tracks your subject’s face during video shooting. When you use the face chaser function to prioritize people in your videos and stills, the camera adjusts the focus and exposure in real time for beautiful results.

See the Sanyo Xacti HD800 product page.
