The HMX-U10 will retail for an estimated selling price of $199.99 in September.

The new camcorders are the Samsung SMX-K40 and SMX-K45 standard-definition camcorders; they're identical except for the way they store video. The K45 will have a built-in 32-GB solid state hard drive, while the K40 will offer no built-in storage. Instead, it will write video to an SDHC card (not included). Both will record video in widescreen standard-definition (720 by 480), offer 52x optical zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD and an HDMI out port to connect and upscale video to an HDTV. The SMX-K40 and SMX-K45 will retail for an estimated selling price of $329.99 and $499.99, respectively, in August.

Who needs an HD camcorder when you can fake it for cheap?

Senior Editor Lori Grunin at CNET says in her post titled Samsung invokes HD to sell SD camcorders:
Who needs an HD camcorder when you can fake it for cheap? That seems to be the rationale behind Samsung's latest standard-def offerings, the SMX-K40 and SMX-K45, a pair of budget models which include an HDMI connector and some mysterious "advanced upscaling" technology to play it on an HDTV in "near full-HD quality."

If I sound dubious, it could be because based on the specs--it's not clear, but it sounds like they use a submegapixel CCD--I have doubts they will be able to produce decent standard-def video, much less attractively turn 720x480 into 1,280x720 (or heaven forbid 1,920x1,080) HD output. But never fear, because you also get the essential stalker zoom lens for that warm and fuzzy outspeccing-the-Joneses-for-a-low-low-price feeling. In this case that means 52x magicaliciously Intelli-Zoomed to 65x. At least they have optical image stabilization.

Consumers shift focus from camcorders to digicams

Suvi Dogra at India-based Business Standard has an interesting article on the Indian market trend. Check the full article for more.
Consumers in India appear to be shifting their focus from camcorders to digital still cameras. Camcorder sales remained flat in 2008, recording single-digit growth rates, according to industry estimates.

As opposed to this, digital still cameras grew by nearly 40 per cent and the category is likely to maintain a growth rate of around 25 per cent this year.

The reason for the shift is simple. In a slowing economy, consumers appear to be looking for reliable yet inexpensive products to fulfil their digital needs. Digital still cameras incorporate high-end technology, allow for shorter films and, yet, are cheaper than camcorders, reasons an industry observer.

“The digital still camera is growing rapidly in the Indian market and taking share from the digital camcorder market based on its compact form factor, improvements in recording capabilities like zoom, editing software, etc, and the consumer preference for carrying a single image capturing device,” explained R Zutshi, deputy managing director, Samsung India.

MSNBC says flash memory means smaller devices

In her article titled "Camcorders get flashier", MSNBC editor Suzanne Choney has this to say about the new wave of flash memory based HD camcorders:

Samsung's SMX-C14 camcorder, due out in July, has 16 gigabytes of internal flash memory and can also use an SD or SD High Capacity card. Pricing has not been set, but is likely to be less than $400.

Some of them are hybrids and some are GPS-enabled. They're not cars, they're digital camcorders and the recent generation of them have almost as many options as automobiles have.

Want to take 8-by-10 quality photos at a friend's wedding, as well as high-definition video? Canon's "hybrid" VIXIA HF S100 includes an 8-megapixel camera. Into "geo-tagging" your video so you know the exact location of where it was shot? Several of Sony's camcorders, including the HDR-XR200 V, have built-in GPS. Like a hint of color in your camcorder? Samsung's SMX-C14 and C10 camcorders, due out this summer, infuse a subtle dose of red, gray or teal into the black body of the video cam.

Boston Globe Discusses HD Camcorders

In a 2-page article titled "Capture memories without hassle", The Boston Globe correspondent John Dyer discusses a few aspects of affordable and small HD camcorders available on the market. While not deeply technical, the article also compares the pros and cons of four camcorders available from Best Buy: Pure Digital's Flip Video MinoHD, for $229.99; JVC's Everio G, for $479.99; Samsung's High-Definition Digital Camcorder, for $722.49; and Sony's Handycam, at $809.99.
"In the 1970s, people gathered in their living rooms to watch grainy home movies filmed on Super 8 cameras. In the 1980s, they carried clunky video cameras on their shoulders and popped cassettes into VCR machines. In the 1990s, they burned DVDs with rudimentary digital recorders.

Today, they're using HD, or high-definition, camcorders to upload videos to YouTube."

Samsung HMX-R10 UFO camcorder release date revealed

Samsung's HMX-R10 offers Full HD as well as nine mega-pixel CMOS still imaging sensor, 12 mega-pixel for still images and 5 x optical zoom. The new video camera from Samsung comes with a new angled lens at 45 degrees, this allows the user to grip the camcorder more easily and will be available from March 2009.

The camcorder has a large 2.7-inch LCD swivel touchscreen, this is also where the users can access to all the function of the Samsung HMX-R10 camcorder. Not only can you record Full HD videos, you can also take perfect still images.

From the press release:

Samsung’s new HMX-R10 offers a nine mega-pixel CMOS imaging sensor, full-HD resolution, a 5x optical zoom, as well as the ability to capture 12 mega-pixel digital still photos (through interpolation).

Form Factor
Samsung’s new HMX-R10 offer users an unprecedented form factor with an angled lens at 45 degrees, allowing the user to grip the camcorder in a more relaxed manner and record their subjects with ease, further reducing the stress on one’s wrist.

The camcorders also offer a large 2.7 inch touch-screen LCD, which serves as the gateway to the camcorders’ comprehensive suite of features. The swivelling LCD also gives users access to key camcorder controls, including record and zoom. When used in conjunction with Samsung’s proprietary swivel grip, the additional placement of controls on the LCD screens allow users to effortlessly control the camcorder when held at low or high angles.

CMOS Imaging Sensor
At the heart of Samsung’s new HD digital camcorder is a high-performance CMOS imaging sensor. Measuring 1/2.33 inches, the CMOS sensor boasts nine mega-pixels and yields impressive light sensitivity helping enhance the overall imaging experience for the end-user.

Still Photos
Consumers can also utilise the camcorders to take more than just stunning high-definition video, as each offers a built-in strobe flash and the ability to capture 12 mega-pixel (through interpolation) digital still photos.

Schneider Optics
Precision optics are paramount in helping produce inspiring video and Samsung’s HMX-R10 camcorder draws attention to this usage by incorporating world renowned Schneider optics. The camcorders’ Schneider lens features a 5x optical zoom and is paired with Samsung’s new Optical Image Stabilizer, to help reduce the blur found in footage as a result of vibrations and hand shake.

The trusted Schneider lens helps capture remarkably clear and sharp video with accurate colour reproduction, and the direct HDMI connection allows consumers to enjoy their full-HD content on their HDTV without the need for proprietary docking cradles.

Samsung Extends Full-HD Camcorder Line

Samsung Electronics America, Inc. extends its family of full-HD digital camcorders with four new models - the HMX-H106, HMX-H105, HMX-H104, and HMX-H100. Samsung’s new H-Series offer users high-performance, full HD video, a renowned Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan HD lens with Optical Image Stabilization, and industry leading design; however, most notable is the use of internal Solid State Drives to provide onboard memory.

The HMX-H106, Samsung’s new flagship full-HD digital camcorder, is the world’s first to feature an internal 64GB Solid State Drive (SSD)*. Samsung’s renowned SSD technology offers a substantial advantage over the use of Hard Disk Drives (HDD) in a digital camcorder, providing consumers with higher performing and more durable internal memory. In comparison to HDD, Samsung’s SSD technology is more lightweight and compact, operates silently with very low heat emission, and features no moving parts, which significantly reduces overall power consumption and enhances reliability.

Samsung HMX-H105 Reviewed by CamcorderInfo

Samsung's HMX-H105 FullHD 1080p camcorder got reviewed by Kaitlyn Chantry at camcorderinfo.com, see more after the jump.

Samsung's entire H-series lineup features the same 1/4.5-inch CMOS sensor and 10x optical zoom Schneider Kreuznach Verioplan HD lens. The sensor is larger than the ones used on Samsung's standard definition lineup, but not as large as the one in last year's SC-HMX20 and the upcoming HMX-R10. It's also a lower resolution that the other high definition sensors Samsung uses.

What makes Samsung's new H-series interesting is the 16GB-64GB SSD; the thought of 64GB of internal solid state memory is exciting for geeks of the camcorder world. But just about everything else in the H105's design we'll have to approach with a wait-and-see outlook. We were impressed by last year's high definition model from Samsung (the SC-HMX20), but the H105 has a completely different sensor and lens. There's a possibility that this will have a negative impact on performance.

The Samsung HMX-H105 model camcorder was debuted on January 5 2009 as a higher-end extension to its full-HD digital camcorder family. The new H-series HD camcorders are quoted to offer first and foremost full-HD quality video, high-performance, a sleek and stylish body design, a high-quality HD image lens with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) support and internal/integrated solid state drives for memory storage. The HMX-H105 is one step down from the premier model in the H-series of camcorders; it will offer a cheaper source for full HD quality video with an internal hard drive. The HMX-H105 will feature an integrated 32GB internal storage drive and also supports the use of an SD/SDHC memory card for video storage as well. Video will be compressed in the H.264 video format meaning users will be able to record up to six hours of video on the 32GB drive and up to three hours of additional HD video on a 16GB SDHC card. Each unit in the H-series includes a Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan HD lens equipped with Optical Image Stabilization support to ensure the video remains smooth and free of the normal shaking patterns caused by human hands. The lens also provides a 10x optical zoom and a 37mm wide angle focal length; most average camcorders on the market offer in the range of 40-50mm. The HMX-105 H-series camcorder will also include additional features such as an HDMI output for full HD support and viewing on an HDTV, a swiveling 2.7" TFT LCD screen and an HD time lapse recording mode which allows users to pre-select a certain period of time for recording.

Samsung HMX-R10 Reviewed

While it still looks like a UFO with its angled lens and bubbly design, the HMX-R10 HD camcorder has a lot under the hood.

camcorderinfo.com has a review of the camcorder and t hey say:

The HMX-R10 has a unique 8x optical full HD lens. There is no lens cap, but the tempered glass is designed to withstand bumps and scratches. The lens is also angled at 25 degrees, which changes the way you hold the camcorder. The new grip is unintuitive at first, but ultimately more comfortable and ergonomic. The R10 is also equipped with the highest resolution sensor of any Samsung camcorder—and one of the largest. This could produce impressive low light results and it promises to make the R10 an intriguing choice for a video/still hybrid.
