Panasonic announces World’s Lightest Full-HD Compact Camcorders: HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10

Continuing to push the boundaries, Panasonic is pleased to announce the release of 2 new camcorders. Weighing a mere 227g the HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 are the world’s lightest* full high definition camcorders – making them the perfect companion to capture those special moments. Don’t let the size fool you – these camcorders are packed full of technology - including an impressive 16x optical zoom, touch screen control, iA with AF tracking and Advanced O.I.S (Optical Image Stabiliser) assuring clear zooming by minimising the hand-shake that often spoils zoom shots. Pretty smart indeed!

The SD10 and TM10 differ only by their recording format – the SD10 records to SD/SDHC Memory Card, while the TM10 offers 8GB built in memory and SD/SDHC Memory Card recording for the ultimate convenience. Whatever your preferred media – Panasonic’s new additions are sure to please.

The World’s Lightest Compact Camcorders

Weighing less than 230 g, the HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 are the world's lightest1 full high definition camcorders – so offer fatigue-free use even for long shooting sessions. Their compact size lets them fit into the palm of the hand, for anywhere, anytime recording of high-quality, 1920 × 1080 full-HD images. These compact camcorders can be easily slipped into a handbag or a pocket, ready to capture video images with snapshot ease.

Zoom in

Featuring a high-powered 16x optical zoom, the SD10 and TM10 clearly capture distant subjects, while the Advanced O.I.S. minimises blurring.

Point and Shoot with AF/AE Tracking

The HDC-SD10 and HDC-TM10 feature the iA (Intelligent Auto)** function, which automatically sets the most suitable Scene mode according to the shooting conditions. These include Advanced O.I.S., which compensates for hand-shake to eliminate blurring; Face Detection, which adjusts the exposure so faces are captured perfectly; Intelligent Contrast Control, which helps ensure proper contrast; and Intelligent Scene Selector, which determines the shooting conditions and automatically selects the Scene setting that will provide optimal results.

SD Card – The Perfect Partner

As the image quality and data volume continue to increase in camcorders, users are demanding more compact, larger capacity recording media. This has led the SDHC/SD Memory Card to become a de facto standard, thanks to its large capacity of up to 32 GB and its tiny, postage stamp size.

Twin Memory Recording – Relay Recording (HDC-TM10)

The HDC-TM10 records full-HD images onto the built-in memory or an SDHC/SD Memory Card (optional), and features a Relay Recording function. When the built-in memory being used to record images becomes full, this function automatically switches the recording media to the SDHC/SD Memory Card to provide uninterrupted recording.

MSNBC says flash memory means smaller devices

In her article titled "Camcorders get flashier", MSNBC editor Suzanne Choney has this to say about the new wave of flash memory based HD camcorders:

Samsung's SMX-C14 camcorder, due out in July, has 16 gigabytes of internal flash memory and can also use an SD or SD High Capacity card. Pricing has not been set, but is likely to be less than $400.

Some of them are hybrids and some are GPS-enabled. They're not cars, they're digital camcorders and the recent generation of them have almost as many options as automobiles have.

Want to take 8-by-10 quality photos at a friend's wedding, as well as high-definition video? Canon's "hybrid" VIXIA HF S100 includes an 8-megapixel camera. Into "geo-tagging" your video so you know the exact location of where it was shot? Several of Sony's camcorders, including the HDR-XR200 V, have built-in GPS. Like a hint of color in your camcorder? Samsung's SMX-C14 and C10 camcorders, due out this summer, infuse a subtle dose of red, gray or teal into the black body of the video cam.

Calamari uses small HD cams for capturing courtroom documentary footage

Calamari Productions, a multifaceted independent TV and digital media production company with experience in child welfare documentaries, uses Canon XH A1 HD cameras to remain as inconspicuous as possible so as to not influence the people and events it shoots.

Calamari Productions has obtained state Supreme Court access in several states to film inside America's child welfare and juvenile courts, detention centers and prisons.

“We go into a lot of sensitive situations where we have to be as unobtrusive as possible,” said Chip Warren, Calamari Productions VP of media and production. The Canon XH A1 camcorder lets the production company “get into places and capture footage” that would not be possible with larger cameras, he said.

Weighing 4.6lbs, the Canon XH A1 HD camcorder measures 13.8in by 7.4in. Despite its compact size, the camera shoots 1080p HD video at 60i, 30f or 24f frame rates. The camera captures light through a Canon 20x HD video zoom lens and directs it to three 1/3in native 1440 x 1080 16:9 CCDs with 1.67 million pixels per sensor. Canon’s DIGIC DV II HD image processor ensures optimum image clarity.

Flip Ultra HD reviewed

Andrew Nusca at ZDNet Blogs has a fresh review of the Flip Ultra HD. Check it out.

What’s it like?

The most recent generation of the Flip UltraHD camcorder fits in the hand rather nicely, curved on the front end, where your fingers would wrap around (you hold the Flip much the same way as you hold a mobile phone when taking a photograph). The back, front, top and bottom faces all are covered in a thin, rubberized coating, lending a soft and slightly tactile touch to the device (the sides shine, and smudge, with a chrome finish).

The device has a nice heft to it, which isn’t to say that it is heavy. The perceived weight actually makes it slightly easier to hold the device steady while recording — wonderful, since it’s very tempting to move your arm with such a small device (the minor heft is not enough to fatigue a hand or arm during use).

On the front is an enclosed, fixed focus (f/2.4) lens; on the back is a two-inch screen that is both surprisingly bright and crisp, and shows a live image quite well (there is a not-unsubstantial degree of motion blur as you move around; I don’t recommend shooting action scenes with a Flip). Also on the back is a big red (you guessed it) record button, surrounded by up, down, left and right keys for navigating the video menu on playback. Flanking the recording button nucleus are play and delete (”trash”) buttons.

A body made from solid polycarbonate delivers high impact resistance, is lightweight, and offers the benefit of impressive clarity so you see your compatible VIXIA camcorder inside this "clear wet suit" almost as if it’s directly in your hands.

Insignia NS-DCC5HB09 reviewed

With 8x digital zoom and 720p recording, the Insignia NS-DCC5HB09 5-megapixel high-definition digital camcorder is a new low-cost player on the pocketable camcorder market, and The Miami Herald has a short review of the model.

Features: Has 8x digital zoom and records video in 720p high definition. Also takes still photos, records audio and plays MP3s. Has a three-inch LCD swivel screen. Comes with USB, A/V and HDMI cables, as well as a wall charger, wrist strap and carrying pouch.

Price: List price is $149.99. On sale at Best Buy for $127.49

Ups: Real simple to take video and photos with it, and the quality was pretty good. Has plenty of options for creative effects, like shooting in black and white, sepia, or putting a cartoon border around a photo. I had no problem connecting it to my computer and saving the videos.

Downs: It says it has 64 megabytes of internal memory. After taking four really short videos and eight photos, the camera said there wasn't enough internal memory to take any more video. When I got home and added up the size of the files, I had used only about 33 megabytes. But that bummer can be easily fixed if you throw in an SD card to expand the memory.

I also had a hard time figuring out what button to press to get to the menu options screen to change settings or delete a file. The quick start booklet was no help. It wasn't intuitive and I had to pop in the CD and read the digital instructions to figure it out.

Bottom line: Overall I really liked it. It's obviously not going to be the most amazing HD camera, but it's a pretty good one to buy if you're on a budget.

Article: Sharing and storing HD videos

Now that you have your family vacation and dog tricks recorded in glorious HD, what do you do with it? Computerworld/MacWorld editor Christopher Breen posted an article on the subject, here are a few sentences to catch your attention ;)

Having an HD camcorder that shoots beautiful, large video doesn't do you much good when you can deliver its output only in standard definition. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to share HD video with the world.

Hosting online

In the past year, HD in the form of 720p streaming video has come to such sites as blip.tv, Dailymotion, Facebook, Flickr, Motionbox, Vimeo, and YouTube. And you're welcome to join in by sharing your HD movies on any or all of these services.
[...]

Burning to disc

Although iMovie '09 can export directly to iDVD, Apple's DVD application isn't capable of burning HD discs.

Archiving

One of the most important ways you can deliver HD video is to yourself in the form of an archive of an AVCHD camera's contents.

Genius G-Shot HD520 skeptically presented by DVICE

DVICE shares deep thoughts on the Genius G-Shot HD520.
When we see a camcorder that records 720p HD video and sells for $149, our skepticism is piqued. That describes the Genius G-Shot HD520, compressing its video into the space-stingy H.264 format and storing it on 8GB of flash card memory (that's not included — aHA!).

Raising red flags also are its 5x digital zoom, which in our book, doesn't count as a zoom at all — all it usually does is offer a blown-up, pixellated enlargement of the original video. This Genius shows its pictures on its 2.5-inch viewscreen, all packaged up in a form factor that looks a whole lot like a $600 Sanyo Xacti camcorder.

Buyer beware. You might be a Genius for avoiding this one. At least wait until you've seen its video compared with the $200ish Creative Vado and Flip Mino HD.

Six HD camcorder reviewed and compared

PCWorld Senior Editor Tim Moynihan takes a look at six HD, YouTube-friendly pocket camcorders from Creative, Kodak, Sony, and Pure Digital, including the brand new Flip UltraHD. With features ranging from a wide-angle lens to variable frame rates, one of these devices in the $150- to $230-range is bound to be a great fit for your needs.

Panasonic Living in HD promotion to give away 30 high-def products in May

From now through May 30, 2009, the company is giving away 30 high-def products exclusively on LivinginHD.com, one product per day (sorry we missed the first weekend).

Unfortunately you won’t be winning any new energy-efficient Panasonic plasmas or portable Blu-ray players.

You can use that high-def TV of yours to view homemade HD videos or photography if you win one of the three possible choices—two Lumix Digital Cameras that include 720p video recording (the DMC-ZS3 and DMC-TS1); and the HDC-TM20 1080p HD camcorder, that also comes with 16-GB internal memory.

If you’re already a member of Panasonic’s LivinginHD.com community, then you’ll be automatically registered for the “Living in HD 30x30” contest. If not, you can check out the contest website for rules, requirements and registration.

While you’re at it, Panasonic’s looking for some new members of its “Living in HD Family” program—and you don’t even have to be an actual family with kids. Families, individuals, couples, or even groups of friends or co-workers can apply online to show off their HD lives.

Panasonic AG-HPX301E P2 HD camcorder unveiled

Panasonic has unveiled an affordable professional camcorder with 10-bit, 4:2:2, individual frame recording and native 2.2-megapixel imagers. Incorporating a low-profile shoulder-mounted design, the AG-HPX301E P2 HD camcorder offers the flexibility of an interchangeable lens but comes standard with a 17x HD Fujinon lens.

The AG-HPX301E imager incorporates advanced 1/3in 2.2-megapixel 3MOS technology to acquire full native-resolution HD images. With a redesigned optical block and a high-precision prism bonding technology, these advanced 3MOS imagers provide exceptional image quality while minimizing any flare and chromatic aberration. A new 20-bit digital signal processor (DSP) also enhances the HPX301E's image performance.

The AG-HPX301E captures full native 1920 x 1080 HD resolution. Superseding the compromise of 8-bit, long GOP, 4:2:0 recording, the HPX301E provides master-quality, 10-bit, 4:2:2 individual frame capture using Panasonic’s AVC-Intra codec.

Delivering the quality of AVC-Intra 100 and AVC-Intra 50, the HPX301E also records individual frame images in 100Mb/s DVCPRO HD and in SD in DVCPRO50, DVCPRO and DV, which provides faster workflow and less degradation in multigenerational rendering.

The AVC-Intra 100 and 50 codecs let users record in a choice of HD video formats. Moreover, it records in SD frequencies in interlaced and progressive modes. The camera also supports 1080/23.98PsF output (via HD-SDI) for use in high-end movie production. The output of the camera can be set for downconversion or crossconversion with letterbox, 4:3 crop or squeeze.
