Sony Bloggie Touch reviewed

PCMag.com posted their review of the Sony Bloggie Touch, the new camcorder from Sony sporting a capacitive touch screen.

The new Bloggie will be offered in silver or black. Its body looks and feels like brushed aluminum, a departure from the glossy and plastic feeling of the older Bloggie MHS-PM5. The Bloggie Touch will ship in a fancy black box that looks like it should contain a piece of jewelry, but the top opens to reveal the camcorder.

Video recordings on the Bloggie can be captured in 1080p (30 frames per second) and 720p (60 and 30 frames per second) while still images can be as large as 12 megapixels. There's a built-in USB plug so you can connect the Bloggie HD to your computer to transfer media and charge the device. An HDMI port is also available so you can plug it directly into your HDTV to playback photos and videos.

The Picsios have a CMOS image sensor that takes 5 megapixel stills natively. As for recording, the PICSIOs shoot full HD in 1920x1080p at 30 fps. Other resolutions include 720/60p (1280x720), and 720/30p (960x540) and what the company calls "Quarter HD" (960x540 at 30fps).

The camcorders also feature time-lapse recording and a touchscreen that users can operate while wearing gloves. The camcorders have an SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot, HDMI port, 4x digital zoom, slide-out USB port, and the WP10 has an MP3 stereo audio recorder. There is no internal storage available.

Capable of 1080p video recording and 14 megapixel still photography, while Sanyo's latest pistol grip HD camcorder falls a little short in a few key areas, it does enough right to make it worth a look.

It may share a similar look and spec sheet, but it's a noticeable improvement over its predecessor the VPC-CG10, squeezing in a CMOS sensor, 5x optical zoom, and SDXC card support among other features.

While 1080p recording still isn't as crisp as some of the rivals, suffering from the odd bit of artefacting and not quite pin-sharp visuals, the VPC-CG100's main video capturing faults lie with the accuracy of its colour reproduction.

DXG USA said last week it is now shipping to retailers its new Sportster series of high-definition video cameras designed for shooting is range of rugged outdoor conditions.

The DXG-Sportsters are offered in to design styles (horizontal and vertical) and two maximum HD resolution levels. Both the horizontal and vertical pistol-grip versions with up to 1080p/30fps video resolution will carry $170 suggested retail prices. The horizontal version is available now and the pistol grip version will ship in two to three weeks, DXG said.

Virtually identical 720p versions of both design styles will carry $140 suggested retails. The horizontal version is shipping now and the pistol-grip version is also slated to ship in two to three weeks.

All of the new Sportsters are said to be ruggedly built and waterproof to a depth of 10 feet. For underwater recording the camcorders feature an unusual "dive" button that provides fully automatic settings for adjust for changing submarine lighting and color environments.

The camcorder is also designed for easy uploading of video and images to social-networking sites such as YouTube or Facebook.

The camera can be used for kart racing, motocross, hiking, and all sorts of automotive racing. You can secure the camera to various vehicles using different types of mounts. Included mounts are a suction cup and various 3M adhesive mounts for curved surfaces and for flat surfaces. The camera itself is very small, is housed inside a waterproof housing, and comes with a non-waterproof door as well.

Focus is fixed at 4-feet to infinity and you can set the camera for center metered mode for recording from a dark car to a bright outdoor. In all resolutions except 1080p, the camera has a 170-degree ultra wide angle field of view. In 1080p, the field of view is 127-degrees. The downside to that wide 170-degree field of view is that the videos have a very distinct fisheye view. I would like to see a 720p resolution with the standard 127-degree field of view.

Panasonic HDC-SD60 Reviewed

Despite the larger sensor, which would usually be accompanied by a reduction in zoom for basic optical reasons, the SD60 actually provides an increase in this area. The optical telephoto has been boosted to a very respectable 25x, and Panasonic takes advantage of the excess pixels on the CMOS sensor to provide an additional iZoom function, which isn't accompanied by the usual loss in image quality associated with a regular digital zoom. This takes the factor to a whopping 35x, which we found very useful indeed for capturing footage of the aerial displays of the Red Arrows flying team, for example.

Coming in at $130 (as of 11/4/2009), the Memorex MyVideo HD pocket camcorder records 720p high-definition footage, snaps 5-megapixel still photos, and has a retractable USB connector, like most of its pocket-camcorder competition. For a fairly low price, it offers decent-quality 720p footage in bright light, as well as a few features we've seen only on pocket camcorders that cost at least $50 more.

The higher-end features are its digital image stabilization, a macro/landscape toggle, an HDMI-out port (cable included!), and surprisingly good 5-megapixel still photos in brightly-lit settings. The MyVideo HD captures relatively sharp and colorful photos, comparing favorably with the output of most camera phones.

While it didn't rival the video quality of competing camcorders such as the 1080p-shooting Kodak Zi8 HD Pocket Video Camera and the 720p Flip MinoHD Camcorder, the Memorex MyVideo HD captured good video in well-lit settings. The following test video was shot in 720p mode in the same tripod location as the Kodak Zi8 and the Flip Video MinoHD (click the "HD" button on the bottom right of each video for the best-quality footage).

Bottom line:
The Memorex MyVideo HD pocket camcorder won't bowl you over with its performance or build quality, but its feature set is a good value for the price.

The Nikon D3000 replaces the D40 with some impressive specs, occupying a notch above the D60 but below the newer D5000. The 10.2-megapixel starter camera is all about ease of use. It includes a new Guide feature that aims to help novice D.S.L.R. users by explaining camera settings and digital photography basics — and providing an on-screen demonstrations of how they affect images.

The D3000 employs the same DX format sensor as the D60 and is capable of the same 3 frames-per-second image capture. But the D3000 improves the autofocus speed and accuracy of the D60 with an 11-point autofocus system.

At approximately 5 by 3.8 by 2.5 inches, the D3000 it has roughly the same compact measurements as the D40, although Nikon has added softly rounded curves to the chassis. It weighs a relatively light 17 ounces.

Nikon has added some new in-camera retouch features that should appeal to inexperienced users, including a miniature effect, soft filter and color outline, which creates a black-and-white “sketch” that’s Crayola-ready for the kids.

Nikon has included the capability to create stop-motion videos, although the camera cannot capture video. Nor does it have a Live View option, which is typical of entry-level D.S.L.R. models.

The D300s, not surprisingly, is a follow-up to the popular D300, a 12.3-megapixel model that currently sells for about $1,800.

The D300s has many of the same specs as its predecessor — identical resolution and image sensor, 51 autofocus points and Live View — but it adds the ability to capture video in AVI format at a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 frames per second. It also includes an input for an optional stereo microphone.

The D300s is a bit faster than the D300, with a 7 frame-per-second continuous-shooting capability (versus 6 frames per second on the D300). Nikon says that the D300a has 15 cross-type AF sensors that deliver better focus accuracy and tracking capabilities.

It has the same moisture-sealed magnesium alloy chassis body as the D300 but adds dual Compact Flash and SD/SDHC card slots.

JVC revealed a new top-of-the-line camcorder in Japan, the GZ-HM400. The camcorder, which captures Full 1920 x 1080 HD video and contains 32GB of built-in memory, appears to contain the same 1/2.33-inch CMOS sensor as JVC's previous top-line camcorder, the GZ-X900. The GZ-HM400, however, has a much larger body design and offers a variety of handling features—including a manual control dial—that are absent on the GZ-X900.
Additional new features on the GZ-HM400 include a revamped zoom rocker that looks like it was lifted straight from JVC's prosumer line, a 10x optical zoom with the Konica Minolta HD lens, and a new K2 technology that JVC claims will produce more faithful, higher-fidelity audio.
Like the GZ-X900, the GZ-HM400 can capture native 9-megapixel still images with a 3456 x 2592 image resolution. The GZ-HM400 will be one of the largest and heaviest members of JVC's Everio HD lineup. According to JVC, the camcorder weighs 485g (including the supplied battery pack), which is roughly 200g more than the JVC GZ-X900 and the GZ-HM200.
Akihabara news has reported the GZ-HM400 will be available in Japan soon (likely the beginning of August) for 110,000 Yen (approx. $1,154 US dollars). The camcorder will be available in black or silver models. No news on a US release date has been verified.

Canon Japan announced two new camcorders today, the iVIS HF 21 and the iVIS HF S11, both AVCHD models filling out its HD line as mid-year updates.
The HF S11, presumably the new flagship camcorder from Canon, features 64GB of internal flash memory, doubling that of the previously released HF S10. It allows for up to 5 hours and 55 minutes of recording in the highest quality setting. The memory can also be expanded with SD/SDHC cards. Inside, many of the components are the same as the HF S10: a 1/2.6-inch CMOS sensor with a 8.59-megapixel gross pixel count, a Digic DVIII processor, and AVCHD recording up to 24Mbps. In still shooting mode, the HF S11 can capture photos up to 3264 x 2456. It also has the same f/1.8 - f/3.0, 10x optical zoom lens.

Though it may be in the same price category as the Flip UltraHD and its clones, there are plenty of things that set the CG10 apart, for good and for bad. While the sometimes mystifying interface isn't nearly as simple to use as the Flip cams, the Xacti offers a wealth of manual controls, digital image stabilization, and 5x optical zoom. It also has superior bright light video performance and impressive still photos that far outstrip the competition. If you want the easiest video recording possible, the Flip series may be a better choice. But our experience both inside and outside the lab proved that you get a lot more camcorder for your money with the VPC-CG10.

JVC Everio GZ-HM400 announced

JVC Japan announced a new full HD camcorder from their Everio series, the Everio GZ-HM400. The device features a 10.3MP CMOS sensor, 10x optical zoom, 32GB of built-in storage, a 2.8-inch flip-out LCD screen, SD/SDHC support, a YouTube and iTunes upload function, a USB port and an HDMI interface.

Buyers will be able to store around three hours of full HD footage in the camera (at 24fps) but can also use SD/SDHC cards (up to 32GB). The Everio can also shoot pictures in 9MP resolution. It weighs 485g (including the battery).

Kodak Zi8 coming this fall

Kodak's new HD pocket camcorder is very slick, and it offers a few features that are rarities in this genre. Most pocket HD camcorders can capture video at 1280-by-720 at 30 progressive frames per second, aka 720p30. The Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera can double the frame rate by capturing 720p60 as well as bump up the resolution to capture 1920-by-1080 at 30 progressive frames per second, aka 1080p30.

The Zi8 also offers electronic image stabilization, a rarity among pocket camcorders. This type of stabilization reduces jerky video via onboard software that automatically adjusts the video while recording. More expensive camcorders and cameras use optical or mechanical image stabilization, which is more desirable but more expensive, but this stabilization physically adjusts the lens or image sensor to combat jerky movements.

Even though the digital stabilization isn't as good as optical or mechanical, digital stabilization is better than no stabilization.

Like some of Samsung's ergonomic camcorders, the U10 will include a unique design Samsung calls a "seven-degree angled grip". In addition to the pocket HD camcorder, the company also announced two standard-definition camcorders and two digital cameras.

Panasonic Broadcast is now providing a free firmware update for new performance enhancements to its AG-HPX300 10-bit, 4:2:2 P2 HD camcorder.

The new firmware update improves CMOS imager performance and compensates for the “flash band” effect that plagues most MOS-based imagers. The update allows the camera to use a specially developed LSI signal process that removes flash artifacts commonly caused by the rolling shutter feature in these imagers. It detects the flash band frame and combines it with the previous unaffected frame image to compensate for divided flash band frames and maintain the natural frame sequence.

If you are hesitant to spend a couple hundred dollars on a new Flip UltraHD, you will be even more hesitant to drop five times that amount on a new Sony camcorder. However, the new flash memory-based camcorders from Sony offer at least a couple of huge advantages over the pocket camcorder market.

The cheaper of the two is the Sony HDR-CX500V comes equipped with 32GB of flash memory and costs $1100, whereas the HDR-CX520V bumps the memory to 64GB of flash memory and costs $1300. Aside from memory capacity, the two Sony HD camcorders appear to be pretty much the same.

Using either cam, you can record amazing 1080p HD video at 60fps. Those of you with shaky hands will be glad to hear about the three-way SteadyShot (vertical, horizontal, roll). There’s also the integrated GPS chip for geotagging your photos and videos. No more wondering where you shot what.

Rounding out the specs are a "Face Touch" mode for focus prioritization, back-illuminated CMOS sensor, direct to DVD burning, zoom microphone, Memory Stick expansion, and a flip-out LCD screen.

Senior Editor Lori Grunin at CNET says in her post titled Samsung invokes HD to sell SD camcorders:

Who needs an HD camcorder when you can fake it for cheap? That seems to be the rationale behind Samsung's latest standard-def offerings, the SMX-K40 and SMX-K45, a pair of budget models which include an HDMI connector and some mysterious "advanced upscaling" technology to play it on an HDTV in "near full-HD quality."

If I sound dubious, it could be because based on the specs--it's not clear, but it sounds like they use a submegapixel CCD--I have doubts they will be able to produce decent standard-def video, much less attractively turn 720x480 into 1,280x720 (or heaven forbid 1,920x1,080) HD output. But never fear, because you also get the essential stalker zoom lens for that warm and fuzzy outspeccing-the-Joneses-for-a-low-low-price feeling. In this case that means 52x magicaliciously Intelli-Zoomed to 65x. At least they have optical image stabilization.

The MHS-PM1 and MHS-CM1 are the two members of Sony's Webbie HD line of camcorders. While the MHS-CM1 has the traditional horizontal layout of a consumer camcorder, the MHS-PM1 offers an upright design that strongly resembles the popular Flip series of camcorders. Both Webbie HD camcorders offer 1440 x 1080 HD recording at 30 frames per second (30p). In addition to its compact design, the PM1 has a unique movable lens system that allows you to rotate the lens up to 270-degrees (great for self-shooting). The MHS-PM1 certainly has a lot more to offer than the Flip camcorders—you can change video resolutions, use scene modes, and take 5-megapixel still images. The real question, however, is whether the camcorder is able to emulate the Flip's intuitive design and simple interface.

We've been toying with a VholdR ContourHD helmet cam for a few weeks now, seeing how well it blends in with our adrenaline-fueled lifestyle. We've mounted it on various helmets, tried it with some moderately extreme endeavors, and, now that we've had a chance to refill our asthma inhalers, we thought we'd share a few of those adventures and give our impressions of this helmet-mounted HD shooter.

First the important numbers: the $299 cam shoots 720p video at 30fps through a 135 degree wide-angle lens, or can be set to capture 858 x 480 video at 60fps if things are going to get really fast-paced. It features a microSD card slot and ships with a 2GB card to start, upon which it will dump H.264-encoded video.

The body itself is durable, made of aluminum, is water-resistant, and interestingly the entire internals of the camera rotate through 192 degrees, meaning regardless of how you mount this thing you can get video that's right-side-up -- or at some crazy angle if you're so inclined. The only problem we had with construction was with a flimsy internal latch which occasionally didn't hold the battery tight enough to make solid contact. A removal and re-insertion fixed that in most cases, but we're wondering how that clip will hold up in the long run.

Apple rumor: cameras into iPods

Apple was late in the game in introducing video capture to its iPhone. But it could be using the feature to shake up the MP3 player market and potentially eat into the ultra low-cost camcorder market ruled by Pure Digital's Flip cameras.

Techcrunch is reporting from a source in Asia this morning that Apple has placed an order for a "massive number of camera modules" similar to what was in the iPhone 3GS. The source says the order can be headed for only one thing: iPods.

Macrumors has followed up with images of iPod Touch and iPod Nano cases that seem to make room for cameras along their backs.

This could be big news if true because while Apple is sometimes slow to include new features, when it does, it puts functionality and features in that elevate the game. In this case, for MP3 players, this would really serve to further separate iPods from the pack, which generally don't have video cameras.

It's unclear if both the iPod Touch and iPod Nano would get video capture. The Nano might just settle for a regular camera. But either way, you're talking about another step up that could eat away at sales of dedicated cameras and camcorders.

The Toshiba H20 has some great features including a 5MP CMOS Sensor, a 5x optical zoom lens and 4x digital zoom, Video Stabilisation, Red-eye Reduction, Scene Support; Auto, Skin, Night, Backlight, Black/White, Classic and Negative. Panasonic Launches HDC-SD10, HDC-TM10 HD Camcorders

Models HDC-SD10 ($550 suggested retail) and HDC-TM10 ($600) are both slated to ship to dealers in September. Both weigh in at half a pound and offer FullHD 1080p resolution and 16-times optical zoom magnification.

Both models also use SDHC/SD memory cards to capture recordings, but the step-up HDC-TM10 adds “Twin Memory,” meaning it also has 8GB of internal flash memory.

Panasonic's Advanced Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) in the zoom function is said to detect and correct for hand shake around 4,000 times per second for clear, stable zoom shots.

A new Active mode extends the hand-shake correction to compensate for bumps and jumps while walking or moving during shooting.

The TM10 will be available in black and silver models, with the SD10 in black only.

The same can not be said, however, for today’s least-expensive HD pocket camcorder, DXG’s DXG-567V. This pocket camcorder, which retails for around $100, is pretty awful. Before I describe the depths of its awfulness, here are its specs.

Like the Kodak Zi6 and Flip Ultra, it runs off two AA batteries, which is convenient if you’re out and about and the camera runs out of juice. And, like the Zi6, it stores its video on an SD card. Again, another convenience as you’re not limited to an hour’s worth of shooting as you are with the Flip and Creative cameras. The DXG camcorder is about the same size as the Kodak camcorder, meaning that it’s bulkier than the Flip or Vado. It also uses the same kind of joystick control found on the Zi6.

Even at a hundred dollars, the DXG-567V HD camcorder is no bargain.

Sony is claiming it has broken its own record by replacing its smallest hi-def handycam with an even smaller one.

The Sony HDR-TG5 Handycam, available from the 1st of July, is so tiny it will slip into a pocket.

Sony reckons, however, that no performance or functional compromise has been made to shrink it to size. In fact, it has a 16GB internal memory which can store up to six-and-a-half hours of HD movies, and up to 13 hours when the optional 16GB Memory Stick is also used.

Other new features include an optional wide-angle conversion lens for panoramic landscape shots, built-in GPS antenna and digital maps that allow users to tag their videos and photos.

Geek.com: First off, this VPC-WH1 shoots 1280×720 HD video at 30fps. That means all your underwater video is going to look very good (compared to what’s out there at this level) on both Vimeo and YouTube–providing you have great lighting to accompany you. The VPC-WH1 does not have a video light of any sort, so that means that some of your images may turn out a bit noisy. In this case, Sanyo’s 3D DNR image noise reduction technology won’t be able to help you because the image becomes softer: meaning that whatever you shoot underwater in theory will look even softer than it already might. Additionally, the 2.5-inch LCD (not very high resolution) might not be able to help you out very well. Once again though, we haven’t tried it yet, but I’d recommend finding good lighting.

PCPro: Sanyo's VPC-WH1 isn't your average camcorder, however. It's completely sealed against the elements, and not just showerproof, but completely waterproof to a depth of 10m. So the next time you go swimming with dolphins, paddling in the sea at Scarborough or windsurfing in Waikiki you can commit the whole thing to video without having to worry about your technology giving up the ghost.

Consumers in India appear to be shifting their focus from camcorders to digital still cameras. Camcorder sales remained flat in 2008, recording single-digit growth rates, according to industry estimates.

As opposed to this, digital still cameras grew by nearly 40 per cent and the category is likely to maintain a growth rate of around 25 per cent this year.

The reason for the shift is simple. In a slowing economy, consumers appear to be looking for reliable yet inexpensive products to fulfil their digital needs. Digital still cameras incorporate high-end technology, allow for shorter films and, yet, are cheaper than camcorders, reasons an industry observer.

“The digital still camera is growing rapidly in the Indian market and taking share from the digital camcorder market based on its compact form factor, improvements in recording capabilities like zoom, editing software, etc, and the consumer preference for carrying a single image capturing device,” explained R Zutshi, deputy managing director, Samsung India.

JVC has announced two new HDD-based high-definition camcorders, both capable of capturing full 1920 x 1080 footage. The GZ-HD40 has a 120GB drive, while the GZ-HD30 has 80GB; each also features a MicroSDHC card slot. As of June 2008, the HD30 is the world’s smallest Full HD camcorder with a 1.8-inch HDD.

The pair are the first offered that can capture in both AVCHD and MPEG-2 formats. At their highest quality setting, the HD40 can capture up to 15hrs in AVCHD or 10hrs in MPEG-2, and the HD30 10hrs in AVCHD or 6hrs in MPEG-2. Both use JVC’s HD Gigabrid video engine, have Auto Light, Focus Assist and Manual settings, and can capture still images while simultaneously recording video (using a 2.68-megapixel sensor).

In her article titled "Camcorders get flashier", MSNBC editor Suzanne Choney has this to say about the new wave of flash memory based HD camcorders:

Samsung's SMX-C14 camcorder, due out in July, has 16 gigabytes of internal flash memory and can also use an SD or SD High Capacity card. Pricing has not been set, but is likely to be less than $400.

Some of them are hybrids and some are GPS-enabled. They're not cars, they're digital camcorders and the recent generation of them have almost as many options as automobiles have.

Want to take 8-by-10 quality photos at a friend's wedding, as well as high-definition video? Canon's "hybrid" VIXIA HF S100 includes an 8-megapixel camera. What’s it like?

The most recent generation of the Flip UltraHD camcorder fits in the hand rather nicely, curved on the front end, where your fingers would wrap around (you hold the Flip much the same way as you hold a mobile phone when taking a photograph). The back, front, top and bottom faces all are covered in a thin, rubberized coating, lending a soft and slightly tactile touch to the device (the sides shine, and smudge, with a chrome finish).

The device has a nice heft to it, which isn’t to say that it is heavy. The perceived weight actually makes it slightly easier to hold the device steady while recording — wonderful, since it’s very tempting to move your arm with such a small device (the minor heft is not enough to fatigue a hand or arm during use).

On the front is an enclosed, fixed focus (f/2.4) lens; on the back is a two-inch screen that is both surprisingly bright and crisp, and shows a live image quite well (there is a not-unsubstantial degree of motion blur as you move around; I don’t recommend shooting action scenes with a Flip). Also on the back is a big red (you guessed it) record button, surrounded by up, down, left and right keys for navigating the video menu on playback. Flanking the recording button nucleus are play and delete (”trash”) buttons.

With 8x digital zoom and 720p recording, the Insignia NS-DCC5HB09 5-megapixel high-definition digital camcorder is a new low-cost player on the pocketable camcorder market, and The Miami Herald has a short review of the model.

Features: Has 8x digital zoom and records video in 720p high definition. Also takes still photos, records audio and plays MP3s. Has a three-inch LCD swivel screen. Comes with USB, A/V and HDMI cables, as well as a wall charger, wrist strap and carrying pouch.

Price: List price is $149.99. On sale at Best Buy for $127.49

Ups: Real simple to take video and photos with it, and the quality was pretty good. Has plenty of options for creative effects, like shooting in black and white, sepia, or putting a cartoon border around a photo. I had no problem connecting it to my computer and saving the videos.

Downs: It says it has 64 megabytes of internal memory. After taking four really short videos and eight photos, the camera said there wasn't enough internal memory to take any more video. When I got home and added up the size of the files, I had used only about 33 megabytes. But that bummer can be easily fixed if you throw in an SD card to expand the memory.

I also had a hard time figuring out what button to press to get to the menu options screen to change settings or delete a file. The quick start booklet was no help. It wasn't intuitive and I had to pop in the CD and read the digital instructions to figure it out.

Bottom line: Overall I really liked it. It's obviously not going to be the most amazing HD camera, but it's a pretty good one to buy if you're on a budget.

Samsung has recently announce two camcoders: the SMX-C14 and SMX-C10. Stylish touch of reddish color, similar to their line of higher end HDTVs. Looks very similar to the HMX-R10.

The new SMX-C14 and SMX-C10 are sleek design and feature with Samsung's stylish Touch of Color finish.

Both camcorders feature 10x optical zooms, 230,000-pixel 2.7-inch LCDs and Hyper Image Stabilization. The SMX-C14 has 16GB of internal memory and an SD/SDHC memory card slot. Users can record over six hours of recording time to the SMX-C14's 16GB of internal memory. The SMX-C10 has not internal memory and requires the SD/SDHC card. Genius G-Shot HD520 skeptically presented by DVICE

DVICE shares deep thoughts on the Genius G-Shot HD520.

When we see a camcorder that records 720p HD video and sells for $149, our skepticism is piqued. That describes the Genius G-Shot HD520, compressing its video into the space-stingy H.264 format and storing it on 8GB of flash card memory (that's not included — aHA!).

Raising red flags also are its 5x digital zoom, which in our book, doesn't count as a zoom at all — all it usually does is offer a blown-up, pixellated enlargement of the original video. This Genius shows its pictures on its 2.5-inch viewscreen, all packaged up in a form factor that looks a whole lot like a $600 Sanyo Xacti camcorder.

Buyer beware. You might be a Genius for avoiding this one. At least wait until you've seen its video compared with the $200ish Creative Vado and Flip Mino HD.

The Sony HDR-XR520V (MSRP $1499.99) packs a lot of punch—and a lot of hard drive capacity—into a relatively small consumer camcorder. The retractable viewfinder and the return of last year's excellent manual control dial are just a couple of the features that will intrigue proficient camcorder users. Also intriguing? The incredibly low noise levels, clear and smooth motion, built-in GPS, and 240GB internal hard drive.

There are some downsides that consumers of every ilk will have to weigh for themselves: no manual aperture/shutter control, mediocre low light performance, the lack of 24p or 30p frame rates, and an intimidating array of buttons, switches, and layered menus. It's not the ideal camcorder for a first-time user, nor does it offer every bell and whistle that the experienced videographer could want. It does have some intuitive features and excellent video performance: a combination that might be just what some consumers are looking for.

The GY-HM700 records two channels of uncompressed LPCM 16 bit audio at 48Khz. Levels can be controlled manually, or automatically using AGC, and an audio meter is provided in the LCD and viewfinder displays for easy adjustment. Balanced XLR inputs with phantom power are provided on the camera for an external microphone and/or wireless receiver, and a shotgun microphone is provided.

Built-in clip view and management functions, a spot exposure meter, and JVC’s patented Focus Assist round out the GY-HM700’s many on-board features. The camera provides HD/SD SDI, Component, Composite and simultaneous DV/HDV IEEE-1394 outputs. Optional JVC remote control units can be connected to the GY-HM700’s 6-pin remote connector.

The GY-HM700 base model is immediately available with a Fujinon 17:1 lens and will be available with the Canon 14:1 in June 2009 at a manufacturer’s suggested price of $7,995. The HS100 is a hybrid model that records full-HD images onto either an SD (or SDHC) Memory Card or the built-in 60-GB hard disk. The Leica Dicomar lens system used in the HS100 comprises 12 lenses in 9 groups, including aspherical lenses to improve resolution and contrast and an LD (low-dispersion) lens to prevent colour bleeding. Also, a special multi-coating process is applied to all lens elements to minimise chromatic aberration, so images are crisp, clear, and free of flare and ghosting. The use of a highly-refractive lens also made it possible to have both 12x zoom power and a compact body.

JVC launches Everio X camcorder

Small but powerful...

Although we’re naturally suspicious of anything that needs an “X” in its name to sound exciting, JVC’s new flagship, the Everio X Hybrid looks like a promising prospect for amateur film-makers.

Weighing in at just under 300g, this will be one of the lighter HD camcorders on the market. To cut weight, and minimize size JVC has done away with an internal memory and relied on SDHC memory cards, bringing the size of the camcorder down to that of a “chunky smart phone.”

The small camcorder will pack a 1920 x 1080 full-HD and capture 9.0-megapixel images. It will also offer up to 500fps recording – perfect for capturing your kids crossing the finishing line at sports day or recreating the Billion Dollar Man in your Y-fronts.

JVC also says that it will come bundled with software to make it easy to export your movies to iTunes or YouTube.

All this will come at a rather high price though - one JVC rep said that the camcorder will cost around £800 when it’s released in June.

Flip Ultra HD hits US store shelves

The Flip Ultra HD camcorder has hit store shelves in the US making it one of the smallest HD camcorders in the market. The big feature of the new camera is the HD recording resolution.

The new camcorder also gets more storage allowing for 120 minutes of HD recording before you need to delete or download the video on the camera. Other features include an HDMI output for easy connection to a TV.

The camera can run from AA or rechargeable batteries as well. The AA route is great if you are away from an AC outlet for extended periods of time while recording. The camera sells for $199.99 in the US making it cheaper that the HD camera available in the UK.

Panasonic to develop new professional 3D Full HD production system

Panasonic Corporation announced it will start developing a professional 3D Full HD production system. The system, which is expected to be the first of its kind in the industry, consists of a twin-lens P2 professional camera recorder and a 3D-compatible High Definition Plasma display.
With Hollywood studios moving towards creation of more 3D entertainment content, Panasonic successfully debuted the world's first 3D Full HD Plasma Home Theater System based on Plasma display and Blu-ray Disc technologies at the CEATEC trade show in Japan in September 2008. More recently, the company also established the Advanced Authoring Center within Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory in February 2009 to support Hollywood studios in developing 3D Full HD Blu-ray Disc titles.

Production of 3D movies requires a great deal of time and effort. With the new 3D production system, which can enable an easier and more efficient 3D production process and environment, Panasonic will contribute to accelerating the realization of easier high-quality 3D content production.

Each component of Panasonic’s innovative 3D Full HD production system has unique features. The twin-lens P2 camera recorder enables the capturing of natural and high-quality live 3D images. Thanks to the non-mechanical solid-state construction of the P2 system, the camera recorder will be compact enough to allow more flexible 3D shooting, thereby maximizing the creativity of the filmmakers by eliminating the stress factor from the use of the equipment.

3D Full HD recording using Panasonic’s proprietary P2 system also enables recording of two channels of Full HD images on the P2 card. P2’s non-mechanical construction and compactness will also be incorporated into the company’s 3D image recording and editing equipment to make production in the field highly flexible and efficient.

The HMC40 is an AVCHD format based camcorder that uses MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 high profile encoding, which provides a near doubling of bandwidth efficiency and improved video performance over the older MPEG-2 compression formats (e.g. HDV, DVD etc.). AVCHD high definition recordings look clean and crisp, even during fast motion, reducing the image degradation or dropout associated with older HDV recordings.

The HMC40 features a full resolution 2-megapixel, 1/4.1-inch 3MOS imager that produces stunning 1920x1080 HD images with high sensitivity. The camera captures still images with 10.6-megapixel resolution directly onto the SD card as a JPEG image. The handheld offers a 12X optical zoom (includes 2X, 5X, 10X) and professional image functions like Dynamic Range Stretch (DRS) that helps compensate for wide variations in lighting, and a Cine-Like Gamma mode which gives recordings a more film-like aesthetic.

In addition, a free transcoder, available for download at www.panasonic.com/avccam, will convert AVCHD files to DVCPRO HD P2 and downconverted DV files for use with most existing professional editing packages.
